An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is an independently verified and registered document that communicates transparent and comparable information about the life-cycle environmental impact assessment of products in a credible way. In brief, an EPD presents the summary of the LCA in a presentable, readable, and marketable way. Advantages of EPD are numerous and sought-after, it includes:
- Identifying areas for environmental performance improvement, encouraging industry efficiency.
- EPDs enable manufacturers to benchmark and then reduce their impacts to ensure that they remain competitive as these limits come into force
- EPDs are soon going to be mandatory in many countries across Europe: France, under the new RE 2020 law, Sweden, when the Klimatdeklaration comes into force, Finland as part of its low-carbon construction roadmap, and the UK under the new London Plan. There is also the Netherlands Building Act 2012 and Denmark’s Danish parliamentary building sustainability strategy
- An EPD encourages the demand for (and supply of) those products that promote the more sustainable use of finite resources and that create less stress on the environment.
