Mohieldin calls for a new climate finance metric

Developing country climate financing needs should start being reframed at the U.N. climate summit in November, in order to move beyond the outdated – and unfulfilled – $100 billion that rich nations had pledged to deliver each year, the U.N. high-level climate champion for Egypt said.

$5 million grant to support African Development Bank

The United States government has announced it will provide a $5 million grant to the African Development Bank to support efforts to abate methane gas emissions, across Africa. Methane accounts for about half of the net rise in global average temperature since the pre-industrial era.

Post-2025 climate finance target: how much more and how much better?

Formal deliberations for a post-2025 climate finance target began at COP26 in Glasgow. This Perspectives article aims to inform this process by discussing the potential size and nature of the target. The authors argue that the climate finance system around the current target to mobilize USD 100 billion per year to support developing countries has been fraught with difficulties and that it would be ineffective to simply increase the climate finance target without addressing these difficulties.

Call for Fossil Fuel ‘Nonproliferation’ Treaty Sets High Stakes for Climate Talks

Initiated by the Global Climate and Health Alliance and Physicians for Social Responsibility, the treaty would be modeled on the WHO’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), the proposed Fossil Fuel Nonproliferation Treaty would be an evidence-based international agreement to control a category of substances well-known to be harmful to human health.
